Enzymes Used For Treating Cystic Fibrosis

June 29, 2009 By: admin Category: Articles

Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disease that causes damage to the body’s internal organs, particularly the lungs and the pancreas. The pancreas is kept from producing it’s natural enzymes that help the body break down and absorb food. This leads to a numerous amount of problems such as improper weight gain and nutritional deficiency. Enzymes can be taken to substitute for the natural enzymes missing from the body due to this disease. By taking these, the body will be able to digest carbohydrates, proteins, and fat, which will promote weight gain and nutritional absorption.

Enzymes require a prescription, and starting in 2004 companies producing these enzymes were required to meet safety and effectiveness standards and have these drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Those diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis should be able to get this prescription very easily and can feel more at ease using the enzymes now that higher standards concerning the drugs have been put into effect.

The enzymes are available in a few different ways allowing some options, they come in capsules, powder, and tablets. Regardless of the option chosen, the enzymes should be taken before eating, to ensure that the enzymes can properly aid in digestion. As long as the medicine is being taken properly, those with Cystic Fibrosis can enjoy the same foods as everyone else can.

Although enzymes are meant to be helpful, and they usually are, side effects can occur. Nausea, diarrhea, constipation, intestinal scarring, and blockage of the intestines are all possible, but the chances of these happening depend on the person and also on the dosage of the medication.

Enzymes are more of a requirement, rather than a choice for those with Cystic Fibrosis, as 90% of those with CF take this medication. As mentioned earlier, Cystic Fibrosis also causes harm to the lungs, and studies have shown that lung health is related to proper weight gain. Not only will taking enzymes help the patient receive proper nutrition and reach a healthy weight, it can also lead to better lung function. The benefits of enzymes, by far, outweigh the negatives, and can make living with Cystic Fibrosis much easier.
